Flood Facts

The summer months bring tropical storms and hurricanes, which also brings a greater risk for flood damage and water losses. Here are some facts about floods to help raise awareness and hopefully help you prevent, or at least limit, any damage a flood might cause.
A flood is a high flow of water for a prolonged period of time, often caused by heavy rain from a thunderstorm, tropical storm, hurricane, or derecho.
Flash floods are quick rising floods caused by heavy rains over a short period of time. These can be very dangerous, as they often have enough power to sweep away trees and vehicles, causing immense damage. Pay attention to flash flood warnings and have an emergency plan in place.
Coastal flooding is a big issue this time of year in our area. Coastal flooding is the result of strong onshore winds pushing on water from the ocean or bay. These can be classified as storm surges and greatly affect homes along the coast. Raising a home may help prevent flooding.
